Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for strong emotions, self-harm, suicidal ideation
DBT aims to foster a life worth living, by lessening suffering. The treatments foster healthier options to face the pain and disturbances from intense emotions and reactivity. When emotions overwhelm they may even lead to coping through self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts. We will collaborate to find the best fit to achieve your goals.
If you or someone in your family is struggling to cope with self-harm or suicidal ideation, I am here to help you practice skills that lead to better emotional regulation, self-knowledge, and distress tolerance.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are normal responses to events that come with stress hormones that flood the system, resulting in exhaustion.
One treatment option is the use of CBT. It is a scientifically proven approach that helps clients reduce the suffering and discover longer-term solutions for relief.
EMDR - Trauma Treatment
EMDR is designed to alleviate symptoms of trauma that interfere with relationships and overall functioning.
Exposure to stressors that overwhelm the system can lead to re-experiencing unpleasant thoughts, worries and fears. Individuals may notice their level of trust and sense of safety is the world gets compromised.
These distrubing memories and thoughts can signal symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and/or other trauma-related conditions.
EMDR uses a similar brain process to REM during sleep to lessens reactivity and enhance access to calm.
Abuse and Interpersonal Violence
We are not what happens to us. This is especially true when facing the impact from emotional and physical abuse, harassment, neglect, and violence. It is often the survivor who perseveres in survival mode.
This is a no judgement zone that looks to tap into the strengths that got you this far. Let's walk through the storm on the way to discovering a better life for yourself.
You will find approaches that apply knoweldge of narcissism and appreciation of cultural power dynamics. In concert, I am open to working with clients who are concerned they may be mistreating others and interested in finding healthier approaches to getting their needs met. This is possible with motivation.
Children and Adolescents
Children can be so vulnerable when they must manage stresses of life that are out of their control. I am passionate about early intervention tailored to children and adolescents, with activities that foster talking through feelings and solving problems.
I help children solve problems the best way they know how; with creativity.
I am a neurodiversity affirming professional, tailoring techniques to the unique needs of each child.
Emotionally Focused Therapy - Couples Counselling
’EFT is based on attachment theory. Attachment needs are relevant for every human because we possess attachment fears and longings. When someone does not feel securely attached to their significant other, it leads to the experience of pain, and fear. Unprocessed pain and fear affect our behaviors. It means we end up interacting with our significant other in ways that leave us feeling disconnected and alone and questioning our love.
“Your spouse’s negativity…leaves you shell shocked. You feel so defenseless you’re left with the most reflexive, least sophisticated responses in your repertoire: to fight (act critical) or flee (stonewall).“
"Any chance of resolving the issue is gone.”
John Gottman
Emotion is the message of love. Because you love and need to feel the emotional presence of your partner, we will help you get in touch with your internal emotions and share them in a way that allows your partner to hold them. We want to get you from secondary emotion (reactive dialogue) to primary emotion (core needs/authentic). Your relationship is my client, and I will track the process that you get caught in. Everyone needs to experience that their significant other has their back. The goal of EFT is to make your relationship your Safe Haven.
